Foundation Stage

Over Foundation Stage (FS), in history, the children will:

  • Explore different places and the local environment
  • Find out about different people
  • Learn about themselves and their family

Foundation Stage History Goals

By the end of FS, a child who is attaining typically will be able to:

  • Sort objects into old and new
  • Understand their own personal timeline
  • Talk about past and present events in their life and their family
  • Answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions about their experiences
  • Begin to show an interest in other people (Reception)
  • Begin to recognise similarities and differences between themselves and their peers
  • Talk about the queen and know that the queen rules our country

By the end of KS1 a child attaining typically will be able to understand and use the following vocabulary:

timeline – king – present – old – differences – new – past – similarities – queen

KS1 History Goals

Key Stage 1

Over Key Stage One (KS1), in history, the children will:

  • Learn about significant individuals and why they are so important (including people from Sheffield)
  • Learn about significant events both nationally and globally (including events in Sheffield)
  • Learn about the importance of historical sources to learn about the past

By the end of KS1 a child who is attaining typically will be able to:

  • Use artefacts, pictures, online sources and videos to find out about the past
  • Put events in chronological order on a timeline
  • Begin to answer questions about a photograph/artefact (Y1)
  • Begin to ask and answer questions about a photograph/artefact and use an information book to answer questions (Y2)
  • Use phrases such as; new, old, a long time ago (Y1) and before, after, past, present, then and now (Y2)
  • Identify similarities and differences between life now and life in a different decade

By the end of KS1 a child attaining typically will be able to understand and use the following vocabulary:

old – queen – king – significant – artefact – present – sources – chronological – past – new – decade
